Both the University of Groningen and Maastricht University are state-financed universities and maintain high levels of teaching and research. The medical programmes of both are of outstanding quality; both programmes consistently vie for the top two places in the rankings; both programmes are highly innovative and extremely effective in training top quality doctors; both these medical curricula are highly integrated. Disciplines are taught in their mutual interdependence, with a constant reference to medical problems. As a student you will learn to see medicine as an integrated body of knowledge, and you learn from day one to apply this knowledge to real medical problems.
The programme consists of a three-year Bachelor’s phase and a three-year Master’s phase. In the Bachelor’s phase you will acquire a sound knowledge of the biomedical sciences and you will learn to use this knowledge to solve real patient problems. Learning to learn new subject matters is essential and you will master the tools necessary to analyze, tackle and solve new problems. By working through a variety of relevant medical problems, you will become a proficient problem-solver.
You will also master a broad variety of clinical skills. Such clinical techniques will first be practised in the skills laboratory on models and peers. However, your role will gradually become more professional as you get more and more responsibility. Simulated and real patient encounters play an important part in the Bachelor’s programme.
The Master’s programme focuses on participation in health care and research. The first two years consist of clinical rotations in different specialties. You will also participate in research activities. Your Master’s degree makes you a ‘medical doctor’ and qualifies you to entering training programmes for medical specializations.
The medical programmes at both universities guarantee that you will be equipped not only with a sound knowledge base, but also with the appropriate medical and interpersonal skills, and a professional attitude.
