Life in The Netherlands

The Netherlands, with 16 million inhabitants, is situated in the north-west part of Europe. Small in size, approximately 200 by 500 kilometers, but with extensive international trade links and high standards of education, health care and social equality, the Netherlands is in the heart of Europe. It is one of the founding members of the EU and other European capitals are only a short distance away. The merchant past is still evident today in both historic architecture and the international outlook of the population. Although Dutch is the main language, English is widely spoken.

The Netherlands generally is a safe country. The public health care system is very efficiently organized and maintains a high level of care accessible to everyone. Crime rates in the Netherlands are low, and even more so in the provincial towns of Groningen and Maastricht.
